Phila., Pa. (Sep. 11, 2018) --- Delaware State’s bid to recover from a 2-0 deficit fell short in the fourth set of a 3-1 loss to Penn this evening. The Quakers won the first two sets, 25-21 and 26-24, but the Hornets stayed alive with a 28-26 victory in the third set. Penn bounced back to win the fourth set to clinch the match.
Penn’s Parker Jones led all players with 18 kills, while teammate Raven Sulaimon added 15.
Mayah Ngundam topped the Hornets with a career-high 17 kills. Milexa Cardona posted a career-high 41 assists and freshman Devin Ruble had a personal-best 17 digs to lead all players in the match.
After dropping the first set, Delaware State jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two. Penn rallied to lead 14-13 before the Hornets scored the next five points to pull ahead 18-14. The Hornets were a point away from the set win, leading 24-24, but Penn scored the last three points to open up a 2-0 lead in the match.
The marathon third set featured six ties and five lead changes. DSU trailed 24-22, but scored the next three points to open up a 25-24 lead. The Hornets won the set on a service ace by Mia Taula.
Delaware State tallied a season-high 12 aces in the contest.
Penn posted a .291 hitting percentage in the match, collecting 52 kills and 15 errors on 127 attacks. The Hornets tallied 53 kills and 29 errors on 141 attacks for a .170 hitting percentage.
Delaware State returns to action at the Lafayette Tournament this weekend. DSU will face Hartford, Fairleigh Dickinson and host Lafayette in the two-day tournament.
