Dover, Del. (July 3, 2018) --- The 2017-18 Delaware State bowling team has earned national recognition for its work in the classroom.

The National Tenpin Coaches Association has released its annual list of teams with “exemplary” grade-point averages for the 2017-18 academic year.  To be considered for team recognition, programs must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. Delaware State was fifth among a record-breaking 38 programs that reached the standard with a team GPA of 3.811.


In addition, six Hornets are among 268 student-athletes representing 55 teams earning NTCA All-Academic recognition by maintaining at least a 3.4 GPA for the 2017-18 school year.

Delaware State's NTCA All-Academic bowlers are Samantha DeLong (jr.; Middleburg, Pa.), Olivia Laird (sr.; Middletown, Del.), Chelsey Merklinger (sr.; Kinzers, Pa.), Ashley Merritt (jr.; Landenberg, Pa.), Alexis Neuer (jr.; Lewisburg, Pa.) and Melissa Ortega (jr.; Stafford, Va.).


The national academic honors cap off another stellar season for the Hornet bowling program.  


DSU’s Kayla Stamm was selected as the 2017-18 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year after leading the Hornets to their second MEAC Northern Division title in her two seasons, while Neuer was the first MEAC Bowler-of -Year in the history of the Delaware State program. She also competed for the United States Bowling Congress national singles championship for the second time in her two collegiate seasons.
