Dover, Del. (Oct. 18, 2019) --- The Delaware State bowling team opens its 2019-20 season at the Second Annual Mount St. Mary’s Shootout in Frederick, Md., this weekend. The two-day 16-team tournament is set for Saturday and Sunday at Terrace Lanes.

The new season also marks the return of Elysia Current as the Hornets’ head coach. Current served a four-year stint as Delaware State’s head bowling coach from 2012-to-2016. In her final season, she led the Hornets to the 2016 MEAC Tournament championship. DSU defeated Norfolk State 4-1 in the tourney finals to capture the third conference title in team history.

Delaware State ended the 2018-19 season with a third place finish in the 32-team Intercollegiate Team Championships, DSU’s best national tournament showing since reaching the Final 4 of the 2009 NCAA championship.

The Hornets enter their opening tournament ranked 15th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Preseason Top 25 poll, tops among the tourney field this weekend.

Host Mount St. Mary’s is No. 23 in the poll, while St. Francis (16th), Duquesne (20) and Youngstown State (23rd) are the other Top 25 teams in the field.

Alexis Neuer (sr.), a 2019-20 Preseason All-MEAC selection, headlines six returners for the Hornets. Neuer has earned All-MEAC First Team recognition in each of the last two years and was the MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year as a freshman in 2016-17.

Stefanny Toala (so.) was the MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year and All-MEAC Second Team selection for the 2018-19 season.

The Mount St. Mary’s Shootout features a unique format for bowling tournaments. Saturday will lead off with five traditional matches – usually reserved for day two. Baker play will occur on Sunday with a pair of five game matches in the morning, followed by best-of-seven bracket play in the afternoon.
