Norfolk, Va. (May 6, 2019) --- The recent hot streak by Delaware State third baseman Jared Gillis (jr.) has been recognized by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Gillis today was selected as the MEAC Baseball Player-of-the-Week after batting .538 (seven-for-13) with five runs batted in, a home run, double and five runs scored in the Hornets’ three-game sweep of Coppin State last weekend. The highlight of the Middletown, Del., native’s stellar weekend play was his performance in DSU’s 18-1 victory over the Eagles in game two of the May 3 doubleheader when he was four-for-four at the plate with a home run, double and three RBI, to go along with a stolen base.
Gillis has been among the hottest hitters in the league the last six weeks.
In 24 games since March 19, he has hit safely in 21, including 12 contests with two-or-more hits. Gillis is batting .402 during the stretch, tallying 39 hits in 97 at bats, including a homer and 12 doubles. He also had a career-best 12-game hit streak during the span, and has hit safely in each of the last six games.
For the season, Gillis is tops on the Hornets and sixth in the MEAC with 35 runs batted in, and is fourth on the team with a .308 batting average. He is fourth in the league with a .381 average vs. conference opponents.
Gillis and the Hornets will close out their 2019 regular season with a non-conference game at Richmond on Tues. (May 7). Game time is 3:00 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
