Greenville, N.C. (Nov. 6, 2018) --- Four players scored in double-figures to lead East Carolina to an 81-56 men’s basketball victory over Delaware State in the season opener for both teams this evening.

The contest also marked the debut of new Delaware State head coach Eric Skeeters.

Isaac Fleming and Seth Leday led East Carolina with 12 points each, while Tae Hardy chipped in 11 and Justin Whatley 10 for the Pirates.

Saleik Edwards was the only Delaware State player in double figures with a game-and-career-high 22 points. Edwards was 8-for-17 from the field, including career-best six three-pointers on 13 attempts. His previous DSU high was 18 points vs. Coppin State last season.

Delaware State scored the first four points of the game on baskets by Ameer Bennett and Jonathan Mitchell. East Carolina answered with a 10-2 run, and opened up a 10-6 lead on a three-pointer by DeShaun Wade with 14:36 left in the first half.

The Hornets trailed 16-13 before a brief run to regain the lead. Edwards capped off the 9-3 run with a lay-up to give DSU a 22-19 lead at the 6:21 mark of the first half.

The Pirates responded by scoring 13 of the next 15 points to open up a seven-point lead.

ECU led 37-29 at the break.

After Edwards nailed a three-pointer on the first possession of the second half to pull the Hornets within five,  East Carolina took control of the game.

ECU’s Leday capped off a 14-1 spurt with two free throws to give the hosts a 51-33 lead with 13:41 left to play. The Pirates led by as many as 26 points in the second half.

The Hornets shot 33.3 percent for the game, hitting just 19 of their 57 from the field. DSU was nine-for-34 from three-point territory (26.5%) and just nine-of-18 at the free throw line (50%).

East Carolina was 26-for-51 from the floor (42.6%), including eight-for-15 on three-point attempts (53.3%).

The Pirates won the rebound battle 49-34.

Delaware State will play its second game of the season this Saturday (Nov. 10) at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Az. Game time is 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
