Easton, Pa. (Sep. 16, 2018) --- The Delaware State volleyball team made a furious comeback attempt, but couldn’t finish the job in a 3-2 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson in the Hornets’ Lafayette Invitational finale on Saturday. The Hornets dropped the first two sets (25-20 and 25-9), but stormed back to win sets three and four (25-23 and 25-18) to force a deciding fifth set. Fairleigh Dickinson claimed the match win with a 15-4 victory in the fifth set.

Delaware State was winless in the weekend tournament. The Hornets opened the tourney with a 3-0 loss to Hartford and dropped a 3-1 decision to host Lafayette in their second tournament match.

In the Fairleigh Dickinson match, DSU’s Mayah Ngundam (so.) posted a double-double with a team-high 15 kills to go along with 10 digs, tying her season-best.

Milexa Cardona (fr.) tallied 36 assists and 11 digs in the FDU contest. Cardona was named to the All-Lafayette Tournament Team after combining for 86 assists and 29 digs in the three matches. She was seventh in the MEAC at 6.21 assists per set entering the weekend.

Delaware State’s 63 digs in the Fairleigh Dickinson contest marked the team’s second highest total of the season.

The Hornets return to action with non-conference matches against South Carolina State and North Carolina Central in Baltimore, Md., next weekend.
