Norfolk, Va. (Aug. 10, 2018) ---Delaware State has been picked to finish fifth in the six-team 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division  volleyball race, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.

Maryland-Eastern Shore narrowly holds the top spot in the Northern Division poll, collecting 13 of 24 first place votes and 131 total points. Three-time defending conference champ Howard is second in the balloting with 10 first place votes and 130 points.    

Delaware State tallied 52 total points.

Morgan State and Coppin State also finished ahead of the Hornets in the poll, while Norfolk is sixth.

DSU was fifth in the final 2017 MEAC North standings with a 3-9 division record.

Bethune-Cookman is the voters’ choice to win the 2018 MEAC volleyball Southern Division crown. The Wildcats are followed by Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Savannah State and South Carolina State in the six-team race.

The top four teams in each division qualify for the post-season MEAC Tournament Nov. 16-18 in Washington, D.C. The conference champ earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The MEAC also announced its 2018 volleyball preseason honors. Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Lucia Babic has been selected as the preseason player-of-the-year.

Bethune-Cookman and Florida &M tied for the lead with two preseason All-MEAC selections each.

Delaware State begins its 2018 volleyball schedule Aug. 24 against Missouri at the James Madison Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va.   

The Hornets will play their home opener against American University on Sep. 5 at 6:00 pm.
