Dover, Del. (May 4, 2018) –Tyler Hoskins tossed eight shutout innings to lead Maryland-Eastern Shore to a 4-0 victory over Delaware State in a MEAC North contest at Soldier Field today.
The Hawks (6-16) pulled to within a game-and-a-half of the Hornets (7-14) for third place in the MEAC North standings. The top three teams qualify for the conference tournament later this month in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Hoskins allowed seven hits and struck out eight, while walking three before giving way to Chris Melrath, who pitched scoreless ninth inning.
The Hawks scored the only run they needed off DSU starter Lane DeLeon in the top of the second inning. Dwayne Marshall singled with one out, advanced to second on a groundout and to third on an error. He raced home with the game’s first run when Blake Coleman was caught in a run down between first and second base.
MDES put two more on the board in the fifth to open up a 3-0 lead. Tyler Friis doubled in the first run of the inning and Dominic DeBlasie drove in the second on a two-out single.
The Hawks added an insurance run in the ninth on a two-out double by Isaiah Chambers.
Delaware State had its chances to score but couldn’t come up with the big hit. The Hornets left 11 runners on base. DSU left at least one stranded on the base paths in all but the fifth inning.
Freshman Cole Garey had two of the Hornets’ seven hits.
DeLeon (2-6) was tagged with the loss for Hornets. He allowed eight hits and all four MDES runs, three earned, while striking out eight and walking two in the complete game effort.
The teams will close out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon. The Hornets will honor their four 2018 seniors prior to the contest.
