Mark James
Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach

Mark James is in his first season as defensive coordinator/defensive line coach at DSU.

Prior to joining the Hornets, James served four years as head football coach at Virginia Union University from 2014 to 2017.

While at Virginia Union, he led the Panthers to an overall record of 26-14, highlighted by the school’s first NCAA playoff appearance in more than two decades in 2015. That season, VUU was No. 1 among all NCAA Div. II schools in total defense.

During James’ tenure at Virginia Union, the team produced five Div. II All-Americas and two players earned National Football League opportunities.

James’ college coaching experience also includes one season (2011) as offensive coordinator at St. Paul’s College (Va.) and a year as linebackers coach at Norfolk State University (2003).

Prior to joining the college coaching ranks, James was a successful head coach at two South Florida high schools, producing more than 50 Division I college players during his tenure.

James played collegiately for the University of Louisville and Virginia Union University as a defensive lineman.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science from Virginia Union University in 2000 and a master’s from University of Phoenix in 2010.  He is currently a doctoral candidate in Higher Education Administration.
