Dover, Del. (Jan. 22, 2018) --- The Delaware State bowling team posted an 8-4 overall record to finish fifth in the 27-team Kutztown Invitational this past weekend. The tourney featured 17 teams listed in the most recent National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 poll. DSU, ranked sixth in the Dec. 2017 national poll, was the highest finisher among six Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams in the Kutztown tourney.
Defending national champion McKendree (Ill.) was first in the tournament with an 11-1 overall record. Vanderbilt (10-3), Sam Houston State (9-4) and Tulane (8-5) rounded out the top four.
Also, Delaware State’s Alexis Neuer (so.; Lewisburg, Pa.) was named to the Kutztown Invitational All-Tournament Team after ranking fourth among 173 competitors in Saturday’s regular team contests.
Neuer had a five-game total pinfall of 1144 for an average of 228.8. She averaged 261.5 in the first two games, including a season-best 267 vs. Vanderbilt. In addition, Neuer posted scores of 256, 226 and 212 on the day.
The Hornets won four of five Baker matches to begin the tournament, with the only loss against McKendree, ranked second in the national poll.
In the regular team games at Kutztown, Delaware State defeated No. 5 Sam Houston State (1059-1051), but fell in tight contests to No. 3 Arkansas State (960-959) and No. 4 Vanderbilt (1092-1083).
The Hornets split two Baker matches with Arkansas State on the final day of the tournament to beat out the Red Wolves for fifth place.
