Dover, Del. (Apr. 19, 2017) --- Freshman catcher Desiree Moreno had two hits, including a grand slam, and five runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a 10-0 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in a make-up contest at the Hornets’ Nest this afternoon.

Tara Tursellino (3-9) was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and striking out five without a walk in the complete performance.

Dani Velez added two hits and three RBI for DSU, who improved to 13-24 overall and 10-5 in the MEAC.

The Hornets opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. The first run crossed the plate when Vanessa Washington drew a two-out bases loaded walk. Velez followed with a single to give DSU a 2-0 lead.

Delaware State opened up a 4-0 lead when Velez doubled in two runs in the third inning.

Moreno drove in her first run of the game on a double in the fourth to stretch the Hornets’ lead to 5-0.

Delaware State led 6-0 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth when Moreno hit a blast over the fence in right center for her first collegiate grand slam to end the game due to the eight-run rule.

Moreno is tops on the Hornets in home runs (5) and RBI (27) and is second on the team with a .302 batting average.

The Hornets outhit the Hawks 12-3. Sabrina Quarles had three hits (3-for-4), while Jasmine Melgoza joined Moreno and Velez with two hits each.

Delaware State returns to action with a three-game series against Howard this weekend. The Hornets and Bison will play a doubleheader on Sat. (Apr. 22) beginning at 1:00 p.m. and wrap up the series with a single game on Sun. (Apr. 23) to noon.
