Statesboro, Ga. (Mar. 3, 2017) ---The Delaware State softball team pounded out 18 hits in a 16-0 win over South Carolina State for the Hornets’ first win of the season in the opening game of the Georgia Southern Eagle Classic today. DSU dropped its second tournament game 9-0 to Eastern Kentucky to fall to 1-5 this season.

In the South Carolina State contest, the Hornets exploded for 13 runs on 11 hits, including two home runs, in the second inning.

After a scoreless first inning, Delaware State broke an 18-inning shutout streak in the second.

Micaela Cummings smacked her first career home run, a three-run shot to left, to open the scoring. The Hornets led 5-0 when Vanessa Washington launched a two-run blast over the fence in center field to continue the hit parade. The home run was Washington’s first of the season and 22nd of her career.

Delaware State opened up an 8-0 lead when Sabrina Quarles drew a bases loaded walk. Dani Velez and Desiree Moreno each had two-run singles, while Jasmine Melgoza had a run-scoring hit later in the second.

DSU sent 18 batters to the plate in the inning.

Cummings drove in her fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the third inning to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead.

Delaware State closed out the scoring when Moreno hit her first career home run, a two-run shot to right, in the fourth inning.

Moreno was 3-for-3 with five runs batted in, while Cummings has two hits and four RBI. Washington and Velez drove in two runs each.

Alexis Goldsby threw four shutout innings, allowing six hits, to earn the win for the Hornets. Hannah Shields pitched a perfect fifth, striking out one, for DSU.

The game was halted after SC State batted in the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

In the Eastern Kentucky contest, the Hornets had six hits, including two by Velez (2-for-2), but failed to score. EKU starter Mollie Paulick threw four shutout innings, striking out three and walking two.

Rachel Minogue and Amber Murray homered for the Colonels. Murray’s was a three-run shot in EKU’s six-run fifth inning to end the game.

Starter Jess Shalongo allowed five hits and the first three Eastern Kentucky runs to suffer the loss for the Hornets.    

Delaware State will face Presbyterian in the Georgia Southern Classic on Saturday, and close out the tourney with games against Marshall and Georgia Southern on Sunday.
