Houston, Tex. (Nov. 23, 2016) --- Delaware State was outscored 35-12 in the last 9:48 of the game en route to an 80-58 loss to Rice at Tudor Fieldhouse this evening.

The Hornets (1-4) led 46-45 after a jumper by Devin Morgan midway through the second half, but the Owls responded with a 13-0 run to take control of the game.  Egor Koulechov capped off the run with a jumper to give Rice a 58-46 lead with 6:12 left to play.

After two free throws by DeAndre Haywood pulled the Hornets to within 10, the Owls ran off 13 of the next 14 points to put the game away. A lay-up by Ako Adams gave Rice a 73-51 advantage with 1:35 remaining in the game.

Delaware State trailed 39-28 at the break, but chipped away at the deficit in the first 10 minutes of the second half to grab the lead.

The Hornets outscored Rice 18-6 to start the second half. Morgan scored seven points and DeVaughn Mallory four during the spurt.

Koulechov led five Rice players in double figures with 15 points. He also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Marcus Evans and Marcus Jackson added 12 points each, while Conner Cashaw and Chad Lott each tallied 11 for the Owls.

Morgan was the only Delaware State player in double figures with 16 points and also led the team with five assists. His three-pointer in the first half marked the 33rd consecutive game in which he’s nailed a shot from beyond the arc.

Haywood added nine points, while Mallory had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Hornets.

Delaware State was 22-for-56 from the field (39.3%), including five-of-15 on three-point shots (33.3%) in the game.

Rice shot 46% for the game, connecting on 29-of-63 shots from the floor. The Owls were eight-of-32 (25%) on three-point attempts.

Rice, which improved to 4-1 this season, won the rebound battle 39-36.

The Hornets continue a stretch of eight consecutive road games with a visit to Montana State on Saturday (Nov. 26). Game time is 4 p.m. Eastern in Bozeman, Mont.
