Washington, DC (Nov. 19, 2016) ---  Delaware State put up a tough fight to avoid its first winless season since 1998, but came up short in a 26-21 MEAC loss to Howard in the 2016 finale for both teams in wind-whipped conditions at Greene Stadium this afternoon . The Hornets close out the season at 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the MEAC.  Howard snapped a five-game losing streak to finish the year at 2-9 and 2-6.

Delaware State led 21-20 before Howard scored the winning touchdown on a seven- yard run by William Parker on the final play of the third quarter.

Delaware State had three fourth quarter possessions, one ended in a fumble and the others at the Howard 42 and 38-yard lines.

The loss overshadowed a career performance by Hornet running back Mike Water, who rushed for a DSU freshman record 224 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. The yardage total was the seventh best in team history and the Hornets’ first 200-yard game since Kareem Jones ran for 230 against Winston-Salem State in 2008.

Delaware State also scored a touchdown on a 34-yard pass from Gilbert Rivera to Fatu Sua-Godinet in the third quarter.

Howard’s Anthony Philyaw rushed for 281 yards and two touchdowns in the game, while Parker ran for 107 yards and two scores for the Bison.

DSU freshman defensive back Brock Nichols had 12 tackles (six solo) to tie for game-high honors.
