THE GAME
Delaware State tips off 2013 with a non-conference game at Marshall. The Hornets have dropped their last three games, each to a major conference opponent, to fall to 5-8 this season (1-0 MEAC). DSU is coming off a 79-50 loss to Maryland last Saturday, the 11th straight win for the Terrapins. The Hornets led 16-15 in the contest before Maryland ran off 17 straight points to take control of the game. There were five ties and three lead changes in the first 10-and-a-half minutes of the game. DSU's Tahj Tate led all players with 20 points in the contest, his fourth 20-point game of the season. Freshman Miles Bowman added nine points and seven rebounds, while Casey Walker tallied seven points and seven boards for the Hornets.

Marshall (7-6) has been idle since an 82-54 loss at No. 23 Kentucky on Dec. 22. Elijah Pittman was high man for the Herd with 20 points in the Kentucky contest. Marshall's Dennis Tinnon added 14 points, while teammate Nigel Spikes led all players with 16 rebounds in the game.

DSU vs. MARSHALL Series (Marshall leads 1-0)
The Hornets and  Herd are meeting for just the second time. Marshall won the first meeting 90-62 exactly 18 years ago today (Jan. 2, 1985) in Huntington, W.V. Delaware State, under second-year head coach Joe Dean Davidson, posted a 12-17 overall record (9-4 MEAC) that season.

Delaware State is 0-5 all-time vs. current members of Conference USA. In addition to the 1985 loss to Marshall, DSU is 0-2 vs. Tulsa (1996; 1999); 0-1 vs. Houston (1996) and 0-1 vs. Texas-El Paso (2004).

Marshall is 2-0 vs. MEAC teams this season. The Herd defeated Coppin State 69-63 on Dec. 8 and upended MEAC pre-season favorite Savannah State 64-48 on Dec. 19. Both games were played in Huntington, W.V.
