Delaware State visits Northwestern University in a South Padre Island (Tex.) Illinois State led 18-16 taking control of the game. The Redbirds scored 24 of the next 28 points, and opened up a 42-20 lead on a tip-in by Jon Ekey with 1:43 left in the first half. Illinois State hit nine of 10 shots from the field, while the Hornets were one-for-seven with four turnovers during the Redbird rally. Illinois State's Nick Zeisloft hit a three-pointer as time expired in the first half to give the Redbirds a 49-22 lead at the break. Northwestern is 3-0 this season. The Wildcats are coming off an 80-53 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in their South Padre Island Invitational opener on Sunday. Reggie Hearn led the Cats with 14 points (4-5 FG; 4-4 FT), while Alex Olah had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

This will be third meeting between the Hornets and Wildcats. Northwestern won the first two meetings, although DSU held its own in each contest. The teams met for the first time in 2004 at Northwestern. The Wildcats won the contest 50-43. Delaware State trailed 21-10 at the half, but pulled to within two points on two occasions in the second half. DSU outscored Northwestern 33-29 in the final 20 minutes. The teams met again the following year, also at Northwestern. The Wildcats won in overtime 61-54. The Hornets could have taken the lead with 23 seconds left in regulation, but Joe Dickens hit one-of-two free throws to force overtime. DSU was outscored 12-5 in the extra period.
