The Game
Delaware State visits Missouri Valley Conference power Illinois State in the opening round of the South Padre Island (Tex.) Invitational. The first two tournament rounds are played on campus sites. Each tournament team will also play two games in South Padre Island on Friday (Nov. 23) and Saturday (Nov. 24). The Hornets enter the tournament with a 3-0 record for the first time since the 1962-63 season. DSU is coming off a 73-69 overtime win against Wagner at home last Wednesday (Nov. 14), the Hornets' first Division I opponent this season. Sophomore center Kendall Gray led the way against Wagner with 17 points, seven rebounds and a school-record-tying eight blocks in the contest. Amere May added 14 points and Tahj Tate 13 for the Hornets. DSU opened the season with wins against Division III opponents Gwynedd-Mercy (74-56) and Cairn (95-46).

Illinois State, under new head coach Dan Muller, is 2-0 this season. The Redbirds are coming off an 86-84 overtime win at Drexel on Thursday. Jackie Carmichael came off the bench to lead five Illinois State players in double figures with 21 points. Tyler Brown added 20 for the Redbirds. Carmichael, a senior, leads Illinois State with a 24.0 point per-game average this season. The Redbirds were 21-14 and competed in the post-season NIT last year.

This will be the first meeting between the Hornets and Redbirds. Delaware State is 0-7 all-time vs. current members of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Hornets have not met a MVC foe since a 77-54 loss to Missouri State in a South Padre Island Invitational contest during the 2006-07 season. In the addition to the Missouri State loss, DSU is 0-1 vs. Bradley, 0-2 vs. Creighton, 0-2 vs. Wichita State and 0-1 vs. Drake in games against Missouri Valley Conference opponents.
