Dover, Del. (Nov. 10, 2012) --- Tahj Tate came off the bench to lead five Delaware State players in double figures with 16 points in a 74-56 win over Gwynedd-Mercy (Pa.) in the season opener for the Hornets this evening.

Amere May added 14 points, while Casey Walker (13), Marques Oliver (11) and Miles Bowman (10) also reached double figures for DSU. Oliver also led the Hornets with 10 rebounds and had a game-high seven blocks, one shy of his school record-tying career-high. Oliver has 13 "double-doubles" in his career.

The Hornets led 37-27 at the break and were ahead by as many as 22 points in the second half.

Gwynedd-Mercy's Frank Champion led all players with 22 points (8-14 FG) and 13 rebounds.

The first half featured seven lead changes and four ties, all in the opening nine minutes.

Gwynedd-Mercy led 9-7 on a lay-up by Justin Knight less than four minutes into the contest. The Hornets answered with a 7-2 run, and opened up a 14-11 lead on a jumper by Tate with 12:56 left in the first half.

The Griffins scored on their next two possessions and, and regained the lead 15-15 on a basket by Shawn Wilson with 12:05 to go in the opening half.

Walker hit a three-pointer on the Hornets' next possession to put the Hornets ahead 17-15. DSU would hold the lead for the rest of the game.

Delaware State used a 9-0 run to open up a double-digit lead.

May capped off the run with a three-point shot to give the Hornets a 31-19 lead with 4:39 to go before halftime.

The Griffins outscored the Hornets 9-7 in the first five minutes of the second half, and pulled to within 44-36 with 15:00 left to play.

Delaware State scored 15 of the next 21 points to regain control of the game. Walker nailed another three-pointer to give the Hornets a 59-42 lead with 6:52 remaining.

DSU opened up its biggest lead, 69-47, on a free throw by May with 3:39 left.

Gwynedd-Mercy could get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

The Hornets outscored the Griffs 20-8 in points off the bench.

Delaware State was 25-for-60 from the field (41.7%), including 9-for-29 from three-point territory (31%). The Hornets struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 15 of 26 from the stripe (57.7%).

Gwynedd-Mercy hit 23 of its 59 shots from the floor (39.0%). The Griffins were just 3-of-16 from three-point range (18.8%) and 7-for-16 at the free throw line (58.3%).

Delaware State outrebounded Gwynedd-Mercy 42-38. The Hornets forced the Griffins into 19 turnovers, while committing 11 themselves.   

Delaware State continues its season-opening three-game homestand on Monday against Cairn (Pa.). Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
