Dover, Del. (Apr. 12, 2012) --- Delaware State strengthened its MEAC North lead after 8-4 and 15-0 victories over Coppin State at Joe Cannon Field today.

The Hornets are now 20-14-1 overall and 10-1 in division play.

In game one, Joey Babuca, Peter Broehl and Aaron Nardone drove in two runs each, and Jordan Elliott tossed a complete game to improve to 6-2 this season.

In the nightcap, Matt McClain tossed a two-hit complete game, striking out a career-high 10 batters. The Hornets scored a season-high 12 runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open.

Delaware State opened the game one scoring with a run in the top of the second inning. JP Frey was walked with two outs and the bases empty, and Nardone followed with a triple to score Frey with the game's first run.

The Hornets scored three runs in the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead. Nardone drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Babuca had a two-run single in the inning.

Coppin State scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within 4-3.

Delaware State opened up some breathing room with three runs in the seventh to stretch its lead to 7-3. Cameron Cecil, Ryan Haas and Broehl each had run-scoring singles in the seventh.

Broehl singled in his second run of the game in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring for the Hornets.

Elliott allowed 12 hits and four runs, while striking out a season high eight batters in his second complete game of the season.

In game two, the Hornets opened the scoring on a double by Cecil in the top of the first.

The scored stayed 1-0 until Delaware State exploded for 12 runs in the fifth. The Hornets sent 18 batters to the plate, although collecting just six hits in the inning. DSU also aided by four Coppin State errors in the inning.

Haas had two run-scoring singles, while Nardone tripled in a run in the inning. Davis had two RBI in the inning, one on a single and the other when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Tony Gatto also singled in a fifth inning run and Nick Arrue had a RBI on a bases loaded walk. The Hornets also scored three runs on Coppin State wild pitches and two on errors by the Eagles.     

Arrue had a two run single in the seventh to round out the DSU scoring.

McClain only allowed singles in the first and seventh innings to improve to 5-3 this season. He also lowered his earned run average to 2.70.   

Davis leads all NCAA Div. I players in hit by pitches with 25, while the Hornets as a team have been hit by 88 pitches, also tops in the nation.

The Hornets will look for the three-game sweep in the series finale on Sunday. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Joe Cannon Stadium in Glen Burnie, Md.
