Dover, Del. (Apr. 7, 2012) --- The MEAC North leading Delaware State baseball team improved to 7-1 in the division after a doubleheader sweep of second place Norfolk State at Soldier Field this afternoon.
The Hornets won the first game 10-2 and completed the sweep with a 5-4 seven-inning victory in the nightcap.
DSU is now 17-13-1 overall, while Norfolk State fell to 9-18 overall and 5-5 in the MEAC North.
In the opener, Eddie Sorondo and Joey Babuca drove in three runs each to lead the Hornets. Sorondo was 3-for-5 at the plate, while Troy Drummond and Ryan Haas had two hits each to lead the Hornets' 12-hit attack.
Delaware State opened the scoring with three runs in the last of the first inning. Troy Drummond tripled to lead off the inning. After Scott Davis was hit by a pitch to give the Hornets runners at first and third, Drummond scored the game's first run on a wild pitch by Norfolk State starter Ryan Vanassche (2-4). Sorondo singled in the second run of the inning and JP Frey drove in the third run on sacrifice fly.
After Norfolk State scored a run in the top of the second inning, Drummond hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Hornets a 4-1 lead.
The Hornets scored two runs on one hit in the third inning to open up a 6-1 lead. The first run of the inning crossed the plate on a walk to Babuca with the bases loaded and Scott Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases full to force in the second run.
DSU scored four times in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Babuca and a two-run single by Sorondo, to stretch its lead to 10-1.
Starter Jordan Elliot (5-2) allowed seven hits and one run in 5.1 innings to earn the win for the Hornets.
In the nightcap, Aaron Nardone drove in the winning run with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The score was 4-4 entering the bottom of the seventh. Haas singled to lead off the inning. Sorondo followed with a walk to give the Hornets runners at second and first. DJ Miller then entered the game as a pinch runner for Haas and Nick Arrue came in to run for Sorondo. Frey followed with a single to load the bases. Nardone then singled to center field to score Miller with the game winning run.
Delaware State led 3-2 before Norfolk State scored twice in the fifth inning to take the lead. The Hornets tied the game at 4-4 on a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth.
Matt McClain went the distance to earn the win for DSU. He allowed eight hits and four runs, three earned, in seven innings.
Frey was 3-for-4, while Nardone and Cameron Cecil had two hits each in the nightcap for the Hornets.
DSU will try for a sweep in the series finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
