BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Casey Beighley (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 3-for-4 from the plate with four RBI in addition to earning her fifth win of the season from the pitching circle to lead the Delaware State University softball team to a 7-3 victory over Morgan State at Lois T. Murray Field Friday afternoon.
In addition to her four RBI, Beighley scored two runs with a triple and a stolen base. From the circle, Beighley (5-3) allowed just five hits, three runs (all earned) and four walks while striking out four in 5.0 innings pitched for the Hornets (14-11-1; 4-0 MEAC).
Beighley drove in the first run of the game in the top of the first inning with a single up the middle to score fellow senior Jordan Reid (Accokeek, Md.), who walked to lead off the game.
The Lady Bears made an immediate offensive attack, scoring two runs on three hits and two DSU errors in the bottom of the frame to go up, 2-1.
Delaware State tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning, as Beighley singled through the left side to score sophomore Stephanie Martello (Oxnard, Calif.). Freshman Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) followed with a single, which allowed Beighley to score and give the Hornets a 3-2 advantage.
DSU added four insurance runs in the fifth inning off of an RBI double by senior Tawny Reeger (Simi Valley, Calif.) and a two-RBI triple to center from Beighley.
Beighley allowed the first two Morgan State batters to reach in the bottom of the sixth before sophomore Stephanie Sarris (Rohnert Park, Calif.) came in in relief. The Lady Bears were able to plate one run, but left the bases loaded as the Hornets got out of a jam and hold on to the 7-3 lead.
MSU junior Amber Bachman took the loss, her sixth of the season, after giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out four in 6.1 innings of work. The Lady Bears fall ot 7-14 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.
The two teams wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Due to the Easter holiday, there will not be a game on Sunday.
