Dover, DE – At the annual Founders Day ceremony today, coaching legend, Dr. Ulysses S. Washington was honored for his dedicated and long time service to Delaware State University.

Dr. Washington came to DSU in 1949 as assistant professor of agriculture education and farm mechanics.  Washington became chair of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 1971 and held that position until his retirement in 1991.

Dr. Washington was a former athlete who enjoyed a great collegiate career at his alma mater Virginia State University and when he notice Hornet Head Coach Robert White needed help, he joined the football coaching staff in 1950 as a line coach.  Coach Washington spent 18 years, including two years during the mid-1960’s as head coach.  He guided the Hornets to a two year 7-10 mark.
