Norfolk, Va. (Sep. 29, 2018) ---Norfolk State scored the first 34 points of the game and never looked back in 54-28 win over Delaware State in the MEAC opener for each time at Dick Price Stadium on Saturday.
Quarterback Juwan Carter completed 22-of-31 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for a team-high 37 yards and a score to lead the Spartan offense. The Norfolk State defense scored two touchdowns and forced four Delaware State turnovers, in addition to stopping the Hornets on four-of-seven fourth down plays in the contest.
DSU scored two touchdowns on kickoff returns, while Hornet quarterback Keenan Black connected with wide receiver Trey Gross for two scores.
Norfolk State led just 6-0 before scoring 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take control of the game.
Carter rushed for a 10-yard touchdown and threw a seven-yard scoring pass to Isaiah Winstead in the second quarter. The Spartans also scored a touchdown on an 80-yard interception return by Brandon Savage in the quarter.
Norfolk State led 34-0 when Kwannah Kollie returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown to get the Hornets on the board with 13:18 left in the third quarter.
The Spartans needed just three plays to answer the Kollie touchdown with one of the own on a 51-yard pass from Carter to Marcus Taylor to open up a 41-7 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, DSU’s Brycen Alleyne fielded the ball at the five yard line and ran 95 yards to the end zone for the Hornets’ second consecutive touchdown on a kickoff return to cut the Spartans’ lead to 41-14. It was his second career touchdown on a kickoff return. His first was as a freshman in 2015.
It also marked the first time in recorded team history that two Hornets scored touchdowns on kickoff returns in the same game.
Delaware State trailed 54-14 when Black and Gross hooked up on 18-and-16 yard touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
The passing touchdowns were the first of the season for the Hornets. Gross, a sophomore, has nine career touchdown catches at DSU. He had career-highs of nine catches for 162 yards in the game.
Black played the entire game for the Hornets. He completed 17-of-29 passes for 247 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Norfolk State won the total yardage battle 430-401.
Alleyne had 129 kickoff return yards, 40 receiving and 26 rushing for 220 all-purpose yards in the game … Devin Smith led the Hornets in tackles for the second straight game, recording eight 10, including eight solo stops … Delaware State had just one punt in the game, while the Spartans punted five time … The Hornets will play their 2018 home opener next Saturday (Oct. 6) against defending MEAC champ North Carolina A&T … game time is 7:05 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
