Phila., Pa. (Apr. 10, 2018) --- Delaware State held a 2-1 lead after six innings, thanks to a solid effort by starting pitcher Juan Sanchez, but couldn’t hold on in a 6-4 loss to La Salle at Hank DeVincent Field this afternoon.
Sanchez allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out three and walking three in six innings of work, but was not involved in the decision.
La Salle scored four times in the seventh inning to take a 5-2 lead and held off a late DSU charge to improve to 9-21 on the season.
The Hornets opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Todd Henry walked to lead off the game and advanced to third when Miquel Rivera followed with single to right field. Henry scored the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly by No. 3 hitter Darnell Maisonet.
Delaware State opened up a 2-0 lead when Henry singled home Adrian Hill with one out in the third inning. Hill walked to lead off the inning and stole second before coming home on the hit by Henry.
La Salle got to Sanchez for a run on the fifth to cut the Hornets’ lead to 2-1.
The Explorers pulled ahead with four runs in the seventh off DSU reliever Hunter McVey. The big blow in the inning was a two-run double by Brett Simon to give La Salle a 3-2 lead. The Hornets fell behind 4-2 when McVey balked in a run and trailed by three when a run crossed the plate on a two-out single by Brian Dudeck.
Delaware State responded with two runs in the eighth to pull to within a run. Cole Garey singled to lead off the inning and Maurice Parsons followed with a triple to score Garey with the Hornets’ third run. Parsons scored the second run of the inning on a grounder to short by Henry.
La Salle tacked on an insurance run off DSU reliever Travis Dill in the bottom of the eighth.
Parsons had two of Delaware State’s seven hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games. He’s batting .423 during the span and raised his average to .300 for the season.
The Hornets (5-26; 3-9 MEAC) return to action with a three-game MEAC North series at home against Coppin State this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sat. (Apr. 14) beginning at 12 p.m. and wrap up the series with a single game on Sun. at noon.
