Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 6, 2018) --- Delaware State scored four runs in the seventh inning and starter Lane DeLeon had a solid outing to highlight in the Hornets’ 5-2 victory over Norfolk State in a MEAC North contest at Marty Miller Field Friday evening.

DSU trailed 2-1 before taking the lead for good in the seventh. Maurice Parsons singled to lead off the inning. There was one out when Adrian Hill doubled to give the Hornets runners at third and second. John Weglarz followed with a single to left field, scoring Parsons to tie the score at 2-2. The next batter, Rich Rountree, doubled to right to score Hill and give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. Delaware State pulled ahead 4-2 on a sacrifice fly by Miquel Rivera and stretched the lead to three runs on a Norfolk State error in the inning.


The game was scoreless until Norfolk State put two runs on the board in the fifth.


The Hornets got one back in the sixth. Rivera doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Norfolk State throwing error.

The Spartans committed four errors in the game, resulting in two unearned runs for the Hornets.


DeLeon pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, while striking out four and walking three to earn the win (1-3).


Travis Dill threw two hitless innings to pick up his second save of the season for the Hornets. Dill struck out four of the seven batters he faced.


Weglarz, Hill and Darnell Maisonet had two hits each for the Hornets, who outhit the Spartans 10-7.

The Hornets and Spartans are scheduled to wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 8). Game 1 is set for 11:30 in Norfolk, Va.
