Annapolis, Md. (Apr. 4, 2018) ---Navy scored five runs in the first two innings and held on for a 7-4 victory over Delaware State at Max Bishop Stadium this afternoon.

The Midshipmen won their fifth straight and completed a two-game sweep of the Hornets to improve to 23-8 this season.

Stephen Born was 4-for-5 with two runs batted in to lead Navy’s 13-hit attack.

Catcher Adrian Hill drove in two runs and centerfielder Darnel Maisonet smacked a solo homer to lead the Hornets.

Navy opened the scoring with four runs off DSU starter Juan Sanchez in the bottom of the first inning. The big blow in the inning was a two-run triple by Jacob Williamson.

The Midshipmen added a run in the second on a double by Born to open up a 5-0 lead.

Delaware State got on the board in the fourth inning on Maisonet’s third homer of the season.

The Hornets got closer with three runs in the sixth to pull to within a run. The rally began when Jared Gillis was hit by a pitch with one out. Cole Garey followed with a double to put DSU runners on third and second. The next batter, Maurice Parsons, reached base on an infield single although the runners were unable to advance, loading the bases. There were two outs when Gillis scored Delaware State’s second run on a wild pitch, while Carey and Parsons moved up a base on the play. Hill followed with a double to center, scoring Garey and Parsons, to cut Navy’s lead to 5-4.

Navy answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth on Born’s second RBI single of the game to stretch its lead to 6-4.

The Middies added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

Navy starter Nicholas Elder (3-1) was the winning pitcher, while Sanchez (0-3) suffered the loss for DSU.

The Hornets (3-24; 1-8 MEAC) return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Norfolk State this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sat. beginning at 1 p.m. and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
