Dover, Del. (Mar. 8, 2018) --- The Delaware State baseball team returns to Soldier Field for a four-game series against Fairleigh Dickinson this weekend. The Hornets and Knights will play a single game on Friday (2 p.m.), a doubleheader Saturday (12 p.m.) and wrap up the series with a Sunday contest (1 p.m.).

Delaware State (2-8) is trying to snap a six-game slide, while FDU is winless in four games this season.

Offensively, the Hornets are batting .224 as a team (70-for-312) in the early going.

Outfielder Jared Gillis (so.) is the team’s most productive hitter through 10 games. Gillis is batting a team-high .351 and also leads the club in hits (13), runs scored (6) and walks (7), and shares the team lead in runs batted in (7) and home runs (1). He was 3-for-3 for a homer and three RBI vs. George Washington in the Hornets last outing on Wednesday.

Freshman first-baseman Cole Garey is off to a good start to his college career, ranking second on the Hornets with a .282 batting average (11-for-39) and topping the club with five doubles, while tying Gillis for the team lead with seven RBI. Garey is also coming off a three-hit game in DSU’s last outing.

Delaware State’s pitching staff has 74-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 77 innings this season, although it’s looking to improve on a 6.66 earned run average.

Starter Lane DeLeon (sr.) is has a team-best 2.12 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 17 innings in his three appearances this season.

Lefty Garrett Lawson (so.) has a team-best 21 Ks in only 16.1 innings, while right-hander Sean McGrath (jr.) is 1-2 with 16 strikeouts in just 14 innings pitched.
