Arlington, Va. (Mar. 7, 2018) --- Delaware State pounded out a season-high 12 hits, but it was not enough in a 12-6 loss to George Washington at Tucker Field this afternoon.

Robbie Metz had two hits, including a homer, and four runs batted in to lead George Washington’s 15-hit attack. Dominic D’Allesandro collected three hits and two RBI, while Steve Bamakian had three hits and drove in a run for the Colonials.

Right-fielder Jared Gillis (so.) was 3-for-3, including his first home run of the season, and three RBI to lead the Hornets.  First-baseman Cole Garey (fr.) had three hits, including a double, in five at-bats for DSU.

George Washington opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the third off Delaware State starter Travis Dill to open up a 3-0 lead.

The Hornets got on the board when a run crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by Alex Vasquez in the top of the fourth inning.   

George Washington answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 8-1. Metz had a two-run homer and Isaiah Pasteur tripled in two for the Colonials in the inning.

Delaware State cut into GW’s lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Gillis singled in a run and the other crossed the plate on a double play.

Gillis smacked a two-run homer in the seventh to cut George Washington’s lead to 9-5.

The Hornets pulled to within 9-6 after a run scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.

The Colonials closed out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Dill (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Hornets.

Gillis has hit safely in nine of DSU’s 10 games to raise his season average to a team-best .351. Garey has a hit in seven of the last eight games to up his average to .282.    

The Hornets (2-8) return to action with a four-game series against Fairleigh Dickinson at Soldier Field this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a single game on Fri., Mar. 9 (2:00 p.m.), a doubleheader on Sat. beginning at noon and close out the series with a Sun. contest at 1 p.m.
