Felton, Del. (Mar. 3, 2018) --- The Delaware State equestrian team has posted another signature win, topping No. 7 Baylor 8-6 at the Dovington Training Center today.
The Hornets won the Western competition 4-2, while the teams rode to a 4-4 tie in the Hunt Seat rides.
The victory is Delaware State’s first against a nationally ranked opponent since wins over No. 7 SMU, No. 8 New Mexico and No. 9 South Carolina during the 2015-16 season.
DSU’s Emily Nelson (sr.; Glenville, Pa.) was Most Outstanding Performer on the Flat vs. Baylor today. Nelson, riding on “Mick, ” led all competitors with a near perfect score of 96.
Also on the Flat, Hayley Anderson (sr.; New Boston, N.H.) earned a point with a score of 92 aboard “Lophius,” while Molly Gara (so.; Chicago, Ill.) rode “Finnegan” to a win with 90 points.
Anderson also recorded DSU’s lone victory in Fences with 81 points.
Delaware State won three of four battles in Reining vs. Baylor.
Monica Ellis (sr.; Collegville, Pa.), riding on “Lyle,” led the Hornets with a score of 68 in the Reining competition.
Cheyenne Adams (sr.; Wapato, Wash.) and Shelbe Jarrett (so.; New Alexandria, Pa.) also posted victories in Reining for the Hornets.
DSU’s Blayne Bell (so.; Shelton, Wash.) recorded a win in Horsemanship with a score of 69 aboard “Orkie.”
On Friday, Delaware State was edged out by No. 10 South Carolina 6-4.
The highlight of the competition for the Hornets was Hayley Anderson’s ride on the Flat, posting a score of 90 on “Mick” to earn Most Outstanding Performer in the event.
