Washington, D.C. (Feb. 24, 2018) --- Charles Williams and R.J. Cole scored 25 points each to lead Howard to a 93-74 victory over Delaware State in a MEAC men’s basketball contest at Burr Gym on Saturday. The contest was DSU’s first under interim head coach Keith Johnson.
Ameer Bennett came off the bench to lead four Hornet double-figure scorers with a season-high 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
Cole, the MEAC’s top scorer at 23.7 points per game, was 12-for-12 at the free throw line in the game for the Bison. Williams, the MEAC’s third leading scorer at 19.8 points per game, was 8-for-9 from the field and 6-of-7 at the line.
Delaware State held its only lead of the game, 15-13, on a steal and dunk by Artem Tavakalyan with 13:23 left in the first half.
Howard responded with a 20-5 run, and opened up a 33-20 lead on a free throw by Marcus Hall at the 7:21 mark of the first half.
Howard led 47-31 at the break.
The Hornets could get no closer than 11 points and the Bison led by as many as 21 in the second half.
Jonathan Walker added 15 points, while Pinky Wiley had 14 and Joe Lewis 13 for Delaware State.
Free throws were also a factor in the game. Howard was 30-for-39 at the foul line, while the Hornets attempted 10 at the line, hitting seven.
Delaware State wraps up its 2017-18 regular season road schedule with a visit to UMES on Monday (Feb. 26). Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Princess Anne, Md.
The Hornets close out the regular season at home against Morgan State on Thursday Mar. 1 (7:30 pm).
