Washington, D.C. (Feb. 24) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets lost in their first game under interim head coach Kyle Adams to the Howard Bison 78-70, Monday night at the Burr Gymnasium.

DSU fell behind early to start, Howard opened the game on a 12-0 run. Ryan Jones gave the Lady Hornets their first points of the game, she scored a layup after using a crossover to get by her defender, with 5:25 left in the quarter.

Her basket sparked 16-6 DSU run, they trailed only by two, 18-16 heading into the second quarter.

Howard jumped out to a 9-2 run to start the quarter, all nine points were from Bison guard Jayla Thornton, she capped off her run knocking down a three-pointer to take a 27-18 lead with 6:48 left.

Thornton finished with nine points on the night for the Bison.

Delaware State responded with a 17-6 run to end the half, Lanayjha Ashe finished the run by knocking down a jumper just before time expired, giving DSU a 35-33 heading into halftime.

Lanayjha Ashe and NaJai Pollard combined for 31 of 35 points for the Lady Hornets.

Ashe finished the half with 17 points, a career high for most points in a single half.

HU outscored DSU 25-17 in the third quarter, they led by as much as 12 points, 55-43 with 4:07 left. Delaware State responded with an 9-3 run. Keke Barber drained a three, cutting the deficit to just six, with the score at 58-52 entering the fourth quarter.

The Lady Hornets were able to cut the deficit to just three on two separate occasions. The last coming off a three-pointer by Ryan Jones with 5:47 left in the game.

However, they were unable to ever regain a lead.

Delaware State shot 26-of-71 (36.6%) from the field, and 5-of-16 (31.3%) three-point field goals.

Lanayjha Ashe, and NaJai Pollard scored 27 points each for the Lady Hornets.

The 27 points for Ashe is a new career high.

Howard made 30-of-57 (52.6%) field goal attempts, and 6-of-18 (33.3%) from beyond-the-arc.

Jayla Myles led two Bison in double figures with 14 points.

Up next for Delaware State is Monday matchup at Maryland Eastern Shore, tip-off starts at 5:30 pm.
