Dover, Del. (Feb. 1, 2018) – Delaware State catcher Desiree Moreno (so.) has been selected to the 2018 Preseason All-MEAC Softball First Team, while DSU second baseman Jasmine Melgoza (so.) and outfielder Mika Lumsden (sr.) were second team picks, the conference announced today.

Moreno, an All-MEAC Second Team selection as a true freshman, was the Hornets' leader in home runs (5), RBI (33), total bases (71), slugging % (.518) and doubles (13) in 2017.  She was also second on the team in hitting (.299), and on-base % (.349), while ranking fourth in the MEAC in RBI and tied for fourth in home runs.

Also a 2017 All-MEAC Second Team selection, Melgoza was third on the Hornets with a .296 batting average and tied for second on the team with 10 doubles. She was named MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week last May 1 after hitting 553 with six doubles in four games. In the field, Melgoza had a .977 field percentage, committing just 5 errors in 217 chances last season.

Lumsden was named to the All-MEAC Second Team and MEAC All-Tournament Team a year ago. She was tops on the Hornets and 13th in the MEAC with a .331 batting average as a junior in 2017.

Bethune-Cookman sophomore Ryan Jackson was selected as the 2018 MEAC Softball Preseason Player of the Year, while Morgan State’s Amy Begg was the voters’ choice for top pitcher.

Jackson was the MEAC Player-of-the-Year as a true freshman in 2017.
