Newark, Del. (Dec. 10th, 2017) --- The injury riddled Delaware State “Lady Hornets” lost 84-49 to the Delaware “Blue Hens”, in the tenth installment of the Route One Rivalry game. Today’s matchup was the first game between the two schools since 2007.

The Lady Hornets and the Blue Hens traded baskets to start the game. The score was tied at 8 each, after a stepback jumper by DSU’s Ryan Jones with 5:28 left in the first quarter.  The Blue Hens ended the quarter on a 17-2 run, to lead 25-10 heading into the second quarter.

DSU tightened up on the defensive end holding the Blue Hens to just 5-16 from the field (31%) for the quarter.  Lanayjha Ashe scored nine of the Lady Hornets 13 second quarter points, however they still trailed 40-23 heading into halftime.

Ashe finished the game with 14 points, including two made three-pointers.

The Lady Hornets were outscored 22-8 in the third quarter.

DSU shot 7-12 (58.3%) in the fourth quarter, but still got outscored 22-18.

Ryan Jones led Delaware State with 17 points (career high), A’Nikeyawna Barber added seven points and grabbed a team high 11 rebounds.

Samone DeFreese led three Blue Hens in double figures with a game high 19 points.

The Lady Hornets made 21-of-59 (35.6%) field goals, they only converted on 3-of-17 (17.6%) three-point attempts.

The Blue Hens shot 33-of-70 (47.1%) from the field, and 3-of-11 (27.3%) from beyond the arc.
