Dover, Del. (Nov. 29) --- The Lady Hornets defeated Longwood 60-56, to get their first win of the season in their home opener at Memorial Hall Gymnasium.

DSU trailed 52-44 after Longwood forward Kristian Antonenko made a layup with 7:29 left in the game. The Hornets rallied back scoring 9 unanswered points including two free throws by Alycea Sharpe to take a 53-52 lead, their first lead since the 6:03 mark of the second quarter.

Longwood guard Khalia Hall responded on the next possession with two free throws of her own to retake a 54-53 lead.

NaJai Pollard made a difficult turnaround jumper over three Longwood defenders to give the Hornets a 55-54 lead, with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter.  Pollard finished the night with a game high 20 points (14 points in the second half) she also recorded four rebounds, four blocked shots, and three steals.

On the next Hornets possession Arion Jackson putback a Ryan Jones missed shot to give DSU a 57-54 lead with 1:38 remaining in regulation. Delaware State tacked on three free throws to put the game away.

The Hornets started the game on a 16-5 run, sparked by Ryan Jones who scored seven points in the first quarter. Jones finished the night with nine points, three assists, and three steals.

Delaware State took an 18-12 lead into the second quarter.

The Hornets relinquished their early lead after Kate Spradlin converted a layup for the Longwood Lancers, giving them a 19-18 lead. The Lancers held DSU within arms reach up until midway in the fourth quarter, they held an eight-point lead on two separate occasions.

Delaware State made 21-of-60 field goal attempts (35.0%), and converted 2-of-12 three-point field goal attempts (16.7%).

A’Nikeyawna Barber recorded 10 points and seven rebounds for DSU. Arion Jackson added six points and six rebounds off the bench for the Lady Hornets as well.

Longwood connected on 20-65 FG’s (30.8%), and made 4-18 shots from beyond the arc (22.2%).

Mallory Odell led the Lancers with 12 points, Autumn Childress added 11 points and grabbed a game high 15 rebounds.

The Lady Hornets will be back on Sunday at Memorial Hall to face Drexel. Tip-off will start at 2:00 p.m.
