Baltimore, Md. (Oct. 20, 2017) --- Sabina Szmajduch had career highs of 20 kills and 20 digs to lead Delaware State to a 3-1 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC North contest this week.
The Hornets won the first two sets by 25-22 scores. The Eagles stayed alive in the match with a 25-21 victory in the third set, but Delaware State clinched the match with a 26-24 win in set four.
Gabriella Enriquez led all players with 36 assists and added 18 digs and three aces, while Alliyah McBean contributed 36 digs to the win. Delaware State’s Taula Leimaluhia added a season-best 15 digs in the match.
The Hornets tallied a season-high 93 digs in the contest, topping the previous school-record of 87 for four-set match vs. Evansville in 2007.
In the first set, Delaware State led 20-12 before Coppin State scored nine of the next 11 points to cut the Hornets’ lead to 22-21. DSU tallied three of the next four points and scored the clinching point on a kill by Szmajduch.
McBean collected nine digs and Szmajduch had five kills to lead the Hornets to the set two win.
After Coppin State won the third set to keep its hopes alive, the Eagles were ahead 22-19 in the fourth set. The Hornets scored seven of the last nine points, including two aces by Enriquez and a kill by Szmajduch to win the set and match.
The Hornets improved to 2-3 in the MEAC this season, topping their 2016 total for conference wins.
DSU will play its next two matches on the road, beginning with a visit to Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday (Oct. 20) evening. The Hornets will visit Norfolk State on Sunday (Oct. 22) before returning home to face Howard on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m.
