Dover, Del. (Sep. 28, 2017) --- Delaware State has three of the five spots on the 2017-18 Preseason All-MEAC Bowling Team, announced by the league today.

DSU’s Elizabeth Burkholder (sr.), Chelsey Merklinger (sr.) and Alexis Neuer (so.) were voted by league head coaches and sports information representatives to the Preseason All-MEAC Team for the upcoming campaign.

Burkholder, a 2016-17 All-MEAC First Team selection and 2015-16 Third Team pick, averaged better than 189 in regular team games last season. 

Merklinger, a 2015-16 All-MEAC First Team selection, posted a 192 average last season.  

Neuer was the 2016-17 MEAC Co-Rookie-of-the-Year after averaging a team-high 198 last season. Her freshman season with the Hornets was also highlighted by a strong showing at the 2017 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championship. This past summer, she was named to the USA Junior National Team (under 20).

Neuer qualified for the coveted spot on the national team after finishing third with a final round average of 206.08 (990 total pinfall) at the 2017 United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships.

Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Jacqueline Rhoda and Alexa Rodriguez of Norfolk State, join the Delaware State trio on the Preseason All-MEAC Team. Rhoda was selected as the league’s 2017-18 Bowler of the Year.   

Also, the MEAC announced the predicted order of finish for the 2017-18 season. The Hornets have been picked to finish second in the Northern Division race behind defending conference champion Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Delaware State collected six first place votes and 68 total points, while the Hawks tallied nine first place votes and 79 points.

Howard, Morgan State and Coppin State round out the Northern Division poll.

North Carolina A&T, last year’s MEAC Tournament runner-up, is the voters’ choice to capture the Southern Division title this season.

Delaware State opens its 2017-18 bowling season at the Kutztown Bud Whitman Memorial Tournament Oct. 15-16 in Sinking Spring, Pa.

Delaware State bowling
