Dover, Del. (Aug. 26, 2017) ---The Delaware State volleyball team opened up its 2017 season on the short end of three contests at the Morehead State (Ky.) Eagle Challenge this weekend. The Hornets began the season with a 3-0 loss to host Morehead State (25-10, 25-17, 25-13) on Friday. Later Friday, DSU fell to Winthrop 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-11) and closed out the tourney with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-18) setback to Youngstown State on Saturday.

In the Youngstown State contest, NaKia Jones led the Hornets with six kills on 13 attempts (.231 attack pct.). Jones also tallied two of DSU’s six blocks in the contest.

Sydney Armbrister recorded five kills and four digs, while Danyelle Tucker and newcomer Mayah Ngundam collected four kills each. Ngundam had a team-high three blocks in her collegiate debut.

Delaware State’s Alliyah McBean led all players with 16 digs.

Gabriella Enriquez had a team-high 18 assists, while also contributing six digs and three kills on five attempts (.400).

In the Winthrop contest, DSU freshman Kiera Holtzclaw tied for match-high honors with four blocks.

Tucker led the Hornets with six kills, while McBean again reached double figures in digs with 11.

Armbrister was Delaware State’s leader with five kills in the Morehead State match, while Enriquez had a team-high 17 assists.

McBean again tallied 11 digs to give her 38 for the tournament and 847 in her career. She was also named to the Eagle Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Hornets return to action next weekend with matches against North Carolina A&T on Friday (Sep. 1) and Presbyterian on Saturday (Sep. 2) in Greensboro, N.C.

Delaware State’s home opener is Sep. 20 against Quinnipiac.
