Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (Aug. 18, 2018) --- The Delaware State women’s soccer team was unable to generate much offense, resulting in a 3-0 loss to Marist in the season opener for both teams at Tenney Stadium this evening. The start of the match was delayed for nearly two hours due to lightning.

The Hornets managed just three shots on goal and four overall in the contest, two in each period. The Red Foxes fired off 24 shots, including 10 on goal.

Delaware State goal keeper Leslie Fazio recorded three saves in the first 14 minutes, but Marist broke through for the first goal of the match when Briana Robinson beat Fazio off a pass from Sarah Hazelkamp in the 17th minute.  

Delaware State had its first scoring chance of the match about two minutes later, but Kayleigh Leschinski’s shot was saved by Marist keeper Makala Foley.

The Red Foxes doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Annika Nielson scored by header on a perfect cross from Keri Bradley.

Marist completed the scoring when Alexa Svensson tallied an unassisted goal early in the second period (54th minute).

Alexa Gibbs and Jasmine Warren also had shots on goal for the Hornets in the match.

Fazio was credited with seven saves, six in the opening period.

Delaware State’s second match of the season is Sunday at home against Wagner College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
