Delaware State takes on North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament. The Hornets are the No. 2 North seed, while the Aggies are the No. 3 South seed.
The DSU/NCA&T winner will face the either three-time defending champion Florida A&M (No. 1 South seed) or Coppin State (No. 4 North seed) at 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
The Hornets won six of their last seven conference games, coupled with late losses by Morgan State, to finish second to Hampton in the final 2017 MEAC North standings. DSU had won the previous three MEAC North titles.
This year's Delaware State squad posted a 17-27 overall record and 13-5 mark in the MEAC during the 2017 regular season.
Mika Lumsden (jr.) is the Hornets' top hitter with a .311 batting average this year. She also has two home runs and is second on the club with 20 runs scored.
Freshman catcher Desiree Moreno is second on the team with a .297 average. She leads the Hornets with five home runs to tie for fifth among all MEAC players, and is also tops on the squad with 31 runs batted in and 11 doubles. Her RBI total is fourth in the MEAC this season.
First-year second baseman Jasmine Melgoza is batting .287 to rank third on the Hornets.
Khaliyah Flournory (jr.) Flournory and Vanessa Washington (jr.) are tied for second on the team with four home runs each.
DSU vs. NCA&T MEAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Delaware State has won its last four MEAC Tournament meetings against North Carolina A&T, although the Aggies hold a 9-8 all-time lead in post-season contests between the teams.
The Hornets have faced NCA&T in the opening round each of the last three years. The Hornets won last year's contest 8-5. Among the current DSU players, Khaliyah Flournory (jr.) was 2-for-2 with a solo homer, two RBI and three runs scored, while Mika Lumsden (jr.) was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored in the 2016 MEAC Tournament meeting with the Aggies.
Delaware State holds a 12-10 lead in its all-time series against North Carolina A&T.
