Dover, Del. (May 9, 2017) --- Four members of the Delaware State softball team have been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for their play this season. The league announced its 2017 post-season awards today, and DSU catcher Desiree Moreno (fr.) and third baseman Danielle Velez (sr.) earned All-MEAC Second Team honors, while second baseball Jasmine Melgoza (fr.) and center fielder Mika Lumsden (jr.) received third team recognition.

Bethune-Cookman led all teams with seven All-MEAC selections, including five first team honorees. BCU freshman outfielder Ryan Jackson was selected as the league's 2017 Player-of-the-Year and Rookie-of-the-Year, in voting by conference head coaches and sports information representatives.

Moreno (Carson, Cal.) is currently posting a Hornet “triple crown,” leading the team in batting average (.309), home runs (5) and runs batted in (31). Her five homers are tied for fifth among all MEAC players, while her RBI total is fourth in the league. Moreno also has a team-high 12 doubles this season.  

Velez (Chino Hills, Cal.) is a first-time postseason All-MEAC Second Team pick. She was named to the 2017 preseason All-MEAC Second Team in February. This season, she's batting .290 with one home run, while ranking second on the Hornets with 21 runs batted in.  Velez is second on the team with 10 doubles and tied for second with 38 hits. She's also toughest on the Hornets to strike out, fanning just five times in 131 at bats this season.

Melgoza (Huntington Beach, Cal.) is DSU's third leading hitter with a .291 average. She has a team-high 43 hits and is tied for third on the club with 19 runs scored.  

Lumsden (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) is second on the Hornets with a .302 average and tied for second with 38 hits. She has two home runs and is fourth on the team with 15 RBI this season.

Morgan State's Amy Begg was selected as the 2017 MEAC Pitcher-of-the-Year, while Florida A&M's Veronica Wiggins earned Coach-of-the-Year honors for the fifth time.

Delaware State will face North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the MEAC on Thursday (May 11) at 1:30 p.m. in Ormond Beach. The winner will face Florida A&M or Coppin State Thursday evening.
