Men's Basketball Coaching Staff
Keith Johnson
Assistant Head Coach

Now in his third season with the Hornets, Johnson joined the Delaware State University staff in June 2014 as head coach Keith Walker's first staff appointment.

Prior to joining the Hornets, Johnson served as Associate Head Coach at Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Coppin State for 13 seasons.

During his tenure at Coppin State, the Eagles captured the MEAC Tournament championship and accompanying NCAA Tournament berth in 2008; and earned a share of the MEAC regular season title during the 2003-04 campaign.

Johnson previously served as head coach and two stints as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Cheyney University in Pennsylvania.

From 1999 to 2001, Johnson was an assistant coach at Cheyney, helping guide the Wolves to a combined record of 30-23 and back-to-back berths in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament during the two seasons.

Johnson was Cheyney's head coach from 1989 to '95, posting an overall record of 75-84 in six seasons.

In his first stint as a Cheyney assistant, he helped steer the Wolves to the 1986 NCAA Division II Tournament Final Four.

In 1987, Johnson was named as Cheyney's first full-time assistant coach.

A Philadelphia, Pa., native, Johnson is a fixture at the prestigious John Chaney/Sonny Hill Camp in the City of Brotherly Love. He has served as a camp director after starting as a counselor.

Johnson was also physical education director at the Northeast Philadelphia Boys & Girls Club for two years.

Johnson is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Black Coaches Association. He served the NABC as a Division II Congressman from 1990 to '95.

Johnson was a standout player as Cheyney during the Wolves' heyday as a Division II basketball power. He played three of his four seasons there under Hall of Fame coach John Chaney.

A four-year starter, he was team captain and selected as Cheyney’s MVP during his senior season. The Wolves reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in each of his four years; and  ranked No. 1 in the country for much of his junior season.

He combined for more than 900 points, 900 rebounds and 300 assists during his collegiate career.

A member of Cheyney's Athletics Hall-of-Fame, Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in Recreation from the university in 1983.
