Norfolk, Va. (Aug. 5, 2019) --- The Delaware State volleyball team should be slightly better in 2019 than last season, according to a poll of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference head coaches and sports information representatives.
Pollsters have picked the Hornets to finish fifth in the six-team 2019 MEAC North race. Delaware State was winless in 10 Northern Division matches (2-27 overall) to finish last in the league standings in 2018.
Four-time defending MEAC champ Howard is the voters’ choice to capture its fifth straight Northern Division title in 2019. The Bison received 15 of 22 first place votes and 125 total points. Maryland-Eastern Shore, Morgan State and Coppin State round out the top four in the North poll.
Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman share the top spot in the 2019 MEAC Southern Division poll.
Delaware State hired Dr. Bruce Atkinson as its new head volleyball coach last February.
Atkinson’s 11-year career as a college head coach is highlighted by a 217-116 overall record (.652 win percentage), multiple conference championships, five Coach-of-the-Year awards and six 20-win seasons.
He most recently served as head women’s volleyball coach at Winthrop (S.C.) University from 2013 to 2018. His 98 wins at Winthrop are third-most in the 32-year history of the program.
In the last six seasons, the Hornets have a 12-153 won-loss record (6-64 MEAC North) and have failed to qualify for the conference championship tournament since 2010.
