Dover, Del. (May 13, 2019) ---Delaware State will battle Florida A&M in the opening round of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on Wed. (May 15) at 12:00 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Hornets are the tournament’s No. 3 North seed, while the Rattlers are seeded second in the MEAC South.

This will be the third time in three seasons that Delaware State and Florida A&M will meet in the MEAC Tournament. The teams met twice in the 2017 tourney in Salisbury, Md. That season, the Rattlers defeated the Hornets 12-2 in the opening round, but DSU bounced back to defeat Florida A&M 7-4 in an elimination contest.  

The winner of the Delaware State / Florida A&M first round contest will battle No. 1 North seed Norfolk State on Thursday (May 16) at 3:00 p.m.

The Hornets won their last four games, including a 9-7 victory over Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference on May 7, to finish the regular season with an 18-23 overall record. DSU finished with a 12-12 mark in MEAC Northern Division play.

Garrett Lawson (jr.), a three-time 2019 MEAC Pitcher-of-the-Week, is expected to start the tournament opener for the Hornets. Lawson is 7-3 with a MEAC-best 1.85 earned run average this season. He also leads the league with a .196 opponent batting average and is tied for the conference high with 97 strikeouts.

At the plate, DSU designated hitter Miguel Rivera (so.) is third in the MEAC with a .370 average, third in the league in on-base percentage (.447) and fifth in slugging percentage (.504).

Hornet third baseman Jared Gillis (jr.) is batting .305 and is sixth in the MEAC with 35 RBI and tied for seventh in the conference with 12 doubles.

DSU second baseman John Weglarz is hitting .319 and is tops on the team with 53 hits.

The Hornets are 57-67 all-time in the MEAC Tournament. DSU won its lone tournament championship in 1989, and also made final round appearances in 1988, ’91, ’93, 2004 and 2012.
