Dover, Del. (Mar. 13, 2019) --- Delaware State left 12 runners on base to key a 7-4 loss to La Salle at Soldier Field today.
The Hornets left three men on base in the fourth and eighth innings, and stranded two in the third and seventh.
Right fielder Ben Faso was two-for-five with two doubles and three runs batted, while third baseman Kevin McGowan had three hits, including a double, in four at bats for the Explorers.
Adrian Hill, John Weglarz and Tripp Kimmel had two hits each to highlight Delaware State’s nine hit attack.
La Salle scored first with three runs in the third inning off Hornet starter Austin Warrington. A two-run double by Faso was the big blow in the inning.
Peyton Sorrels singled in a fourth inning run to give the Explorers a 4-0 lead.
La Salle opened up a 6-0 lead after a run-scoring single by Tatem Levins and a bases loaded walk to Quentin Brown in the fifth.
Delaware State answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to get back into the game.
Hill singled to lead off the inning and Weglarz followed with a double to put runners at third and second. The next batter, Jared Gillis, grounded out to first, scoring Hill with the Hornets’ first run of the game. Weglarz was still on second with two outs when Todd Henry singled him home to cut a Salle’s lead to 6-2. Alex Vasquez singled in DSU’s third run of the inning and the fourth run crossed the plate on an error by the Explorers.
La Salle scored a run off the Hornet bullpen in the eighth to stretch its lead to 7-4.
Delaware State loaded the bases with two in the bottom of the eighth, but failed to score.
Conner Hinchcliffe, the Explorers’ fifth pitcher of the game, retired the Hornets in order in the ninth inning to earn the save.
Warrington (0-1) allowed six hits and six hits, while striking out four and walking three in four inning to suffer the loss.
DSU (5-8) begins MEAC play with a three-game series at Norfolk State this weekend. The Hornets and Spartans will open the series with 3:00 p.m. contest on Friday. The teams will also play singles games on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
