Dover, Del. (Jan. 7)  The Delaware State Lady Hornets drop their conference home opener to the Coppin State Eagles 71-57, Monday evening at Memorial Hall. Delaware State drops to 2-11 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

NaJai Pollard bounced back from her performance at Norfolk State she led the team with 21 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block.

Lanayjha Ashe added 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and one block.

Alycea Sharpe scored 8 points (all in the first half) and 10 rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist.

The Eagles started the game on a modest 8-2 run. Delaware State answered back with Alycea Sharpe converting on an ‘AND-1’ opportunity after scoring a layup despite being fouled. On the very next possession, Tylea Galloway shook her defender with a behind the back crossover, and then dished the ball to an open Sharpe, who knocked down the short corner jumper bringing DSU within one.

DSU briefly led in the first quarter after a three-pointer from Lanayjha Ashe gave them a 12-11 lead with 3:34 remaining. The Lady Hornets and the Eagles traded buckets back and forth, having four lead changes before ending the quarter with the game tied at 19.

Both offenses were electric to start the game, as they both shot over 40% on field goal attempts, including two made three-pointers for each side.

However, both teams cooled off in the second quarter, as neither team shot over 25% from the field. DSU was outscored 9-8 and entered the second half trailing 28-27.

The offenses for both teams came alive again, in the third quarter. Coppin State took a 46-38-point lead after Brooke Fields made a jumper. Fields gave the Lady Hornets trouble all night long, she finished with a game high 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Delaware State responded with an 7-2 run that started with a Lanayjha Ashe three and ended with a beautiful move resulting in a layup by NaJai Pollard just before time expired in the third quarter.

The game got away from DSU in the fourth quarter. Coppin State outscored them 23-12, as they shot 60% from the floor and 75% on three-point attempts in the final 10:00 minutes.

For the game Delaware State shot 22-of-60 from the field (36.7%), 4-of-15 on three-pointers (26.7%) and 9-of-15 from the free throw line (60.0%).

Coppin State made 24-of-54 from the field (44.4%), 10-of-20 (50.0%) from beyond-the-arc, and 13-of-14 (92.9%) from the charity stripe.

1. Coppin State made 10 three-pointers.
2. DSU committed 20 turnovers.
3. DSU outrebounded CSU 38-32.

The Lady Hornets will continue their three game homestand with a matchup against North Carolina A&T on Jan.12. Tip-off starts at 2:00 pm.

NaJai Pollard has 1,650 points for her career, and now has the third most points for a single career in school history.
Pollard has 875 career rebounds and is 52 boards away from having the third-most rebounds in school history.
