Dover, Del. (Nov. 10. 2017) --- Center Simon Okolue posted a double-double in his first Delaware State contest, notching 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to lead the Hornets to a 71-50 win over Cairn in Memorial Hall this evening.

DSU forward Artem Tavakalyn led all players with 18 points, while newcomer Jonathan Mitchell (San Jacinto CC) came off the bench to add 13 points on perfect shooting in the game. Mitchell was 5-for-5 from the field and converted on three free throws. He also had three assists, a block and steal in his 29-minute Hornet debut.

Malachi Hall was high scorer for the Division III Highlanders with 12 points.

Okolue, a transfer from Northwest Florida College, knocked down 8-of-13 shots from the floor and tallied eight offensive rebounds.  He also led all players with two blocks.

Delaware State outrebounded the Highlanders 52-31 in the contest, including 20-11 on offensive boards.

The Hornets led 8-6 before taking control. Marquis Collins capped off a 13-2 run with two free throws to give DSU a 21-8 lead with 10:31 left in the first half.

Delaware State opened up its biggest first half lead, 35-18, on a three-pointer by Pinky Wiley with 3:13 to go before halftime.

The Hornets led 35-20 at the break.

DSU held its largest lead of the game, 71-44, on a lay-up by Tavakalyn at the 5:00 mark of the second half.

Kobe Gantz had eight points (3-6 FGs) and led all players with five assists and three steals for the Hornets. Tavakalyn also had four assists in the game.

Delaware State was 27-for-64 from the field (42.2%) , but just 2-of-14 on three-point attempts (14.3%). The Hornets were 16-for-21 at the free throw line (71.4%).

Cairn was held to 34.4% from the field, connecting on 21-of-61 shots, including 4-of-20 from three-point range (20.0%). The Highlanders hit just four free throws on 10 attempts.

Delaware State will begin a four-game road swing with a first-time visit to DePaul on Monday (Nov. 13). The Hornets will also travel to IPFW (Nov. 15), Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 16) and East Tennessee State (Nov. 20) before returning home Nov. 25 to face Georgian Court (4:00 p.m.).
