Newark, Del. (Mar. 5, 2017) ---Rider snapped a tie with two eighth inning runs in a 4-2 victory over Delaware State at Bob Hannah Stadium today.

The score was 2-2 when Rider’s Lee Lipinski singled in the go-ahead run off Hornet reliever Terry Godfrey with one out in the eighth. The Broncs scored their fourth run on a Hornet error with two outs in the inning.

Delaware State scored first in the game with a third inning run. Devin Beverly walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Darnel Maisonet.

Rider scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to open up a 2-1 lead.

The Hornets scored a run on the sixth to tie the game. Ciaran Devenney drew a walk to lead off the sixth. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a walk that loaded the bases. The next batter Kwestin Smith drove home Devenney on a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 2.

Catcher Evan Regez had two of the Hornets’ six hits. Austin Bentley doubled with one out in the seventh for DSU’s lone extra base hit of the game.

Sean McGrath, who allowed two hits and two runs in three innings of relief, was the losing pitcher for the Hornets.

Lane DeLeon started for DSU. He surrendered a run on two hits while striking out four in four innings.

Dylan Simcik, the fourth of five pitchers for the Broncs, threw one inning of scoreless relief to earn the win. Andrew Tumbelty retired all three Delaware State batters he faced in the ninth to get the save.

The Hornets will be back in action tomorrow (Mar. 6) against the University of Delaware. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Bob Hannah Field.

Delaware State is scheduled to play its 2017 home opener on Tues. (Mar. 7) against Towson. The first pitch is scheduled for 2: 00 p.m. at Soldier Field.
