Rock Hill, S.C. (Mar. 9, 2013) --- Ashley Bennett singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Delaware State a 5-4 walk-off win over Harvard at the Winthrop Classic today.
The Hornets (2-9) led 4-2 before Harvard scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Nicole Gazzolla singled to lead off the DSU seventh. Kelsey Doherty followed with a single to give the Hornets runners at first and second. There was one out when Rochelle Sablay had an infield single to load the bases. One out later, Bennett singled up the middle to score Gazzolla with the winning run.
Harvard (2-4) opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning.
Delaware State answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Jess Madrid singled to lead off the Hornet first. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a one-out double by Doherty to tie the game at 1-1. Doherty later scored on a bases loaded walk to Jen Fischbach to give DSU a 2-1 lead. The Hornets scored another run on a bases loaded walk and added their fourth run of the inning on a Harvard error.
The Crimson chipped way with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game.
Fischbach (2-6) was the winning pitcher for Delaware State.
The Hornets outhit Harvard 9-8. Madrid, Gazzolla and Doherty had two hits each for DSU.
