Dover, Del. (Feb. 25, 2013) --- Fairleigh Dickinson snapped a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fourth inning en route to a 4-2 win over Delaware State in the Hornets' softball opener in the Norfolk State Tournament on Sunday. Later in the day, DSU fell to Monmouth 5-1.

In the Fairleigh Dickinson contest, Delaware State took the early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning.

Rochelle Sablay singled to lead off the second inning for the Hornets. Kelsey Doherty followed with a single to give DSU runners on second and first. Two batters later, Jordan Stamps reached base on an error to load the bases. Sablay scored the game's first run when Nicole Gazzolla reached on a fielder's choice. The Hornets opened up a 2-0 lead when Doherty crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Madrid.

Fairleigh Dickinson responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. The Knights scored their first run on a one-out solo homer by Maire Shaughnessy off DSU starter Stephanie Sarris. FDU tied the game with a run on a Delaware State error in the inning.

The Knights took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Angelique Nieves led off the inning with a homer. FDU took a 4-2 lead when the second run scored on a wild pitch.

The Hornets put runners on base in the fifth and seventh innings, but failed to score.

In the Monmouth contest, the Hawks scored single runs in the first and third innings to open up a 2-0 lead.

Delaware State got a run back in the fourth on Doherty's first career home run to pull to within 2-1.

Monmouth added three insurance runs on a three-run homer by Vanessa Cardoza in the top of the sixth inning.        

The Hornets (0-2) put runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to score.

Delaware State will wrap up Norfolk Tournament play against Fairleigh Dickinson at 11:00 a.m. today.
