Princess Anne, Md. (Jan. 19, 2013) --- Playing its first game in two weeks, Delaware State hit less than a third of its shots in a 58-53 loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore in a MEAC men's contest at the Hytche Center today.

The Hornets fell to 6-10 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC. The Hawks, who avenged a 76-66 loss to DSU on Dec. 1,  picked up their first win of the season (1-13; 1-2 MEAC).

DSU cut a 15-point second half deficit to three with three-and-a-half minutes left to play, but UMES hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Delaware State was 16-for-49 from the field (32.7%), including 6-of-27 from three-point territory (22.2%). The Hornets stayed in the game by hitting 15 of their 19 free throws.

Senior Marques Oliver was the only Delaware State player in double figures with a season-high 15 points. Oliver's performance was highlighted 9-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. He also led the Hornets with six rebounds.

Kevin Mays scored a game-high 17 points (13-14 FTs) to lead four UMES players in double figures. Troy Snyder, Francis Ezeiru and Ishaq Pitt added 10 points each for the Hawks.

UMES was 13-for-30 from the field (43.3%), including 2-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Hawks hit 30 of their 40 free throws.

UMES led 25-18 at the half and opened up a 39-24 lead on a dunk by Donald Williams II with 15:19 left to play.

Delaware State used an 11-0 run late in the second half to pull close. Casey Walker (6 points) capped off the run with a three-pointer to cut the Hawks' lead to 47-44 with 3:28 remaining.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 23) at home against Howard. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
